Han Dynasty

China was then succeeded with the Han dynasty (206 BCE–220 CE). Although the government system was a mixture of feudal structure and a central bureaucracy, it was known to be a fairer environment as there was appropriate laws and order.

Han Wudi, the fifth emperor of Han dynasty
Han Wudi ruled for 54 years and is one of the longest ruling rulers of all time in ancient history. He was the most powerful Emperor of the Han Dynasty and he strengthened his own power by putting an end to the power of the nobles.

Han Wudi began the meritocractic system as he believed that good government depended on “best brains” and not “best blood” . Han also introduced the imperial civil service examination to get best talents to ensure a good government. Han had ensured peace and fairness in his empire. This way, he could also build up a strong and reliable government as people who later became officials are those who passed the examination. The examinations were mainly based on Confucianism.
